Polish Agriculture Minister Czesław Siekierski said that from June 6, the EU will return to the terms of trade defined by the Association Agreement with Ukraine. According to him, the established quotas for the import of Ukrainian agricultural products are low, which is beneficial for EU member states, in particular Poland.Siekierski stressed that in trade relations with Ukraine it is necessary to maintain a balance, and Ukrainian products must meet the quality standards adopted in the European Union. He emphasized that Polish farmers and consumers expect Ukrainian products to comply with European standards. The minister also noted that the transition to European standards will lead to an increase in the cost of production in Ukraine, and therefore to an increase in prices for Ukrainian goods on the EU market. He added that currently in Ukraine, means are used that are prohibited in the European Union, and the rejection of them will require additional costs.
The preparatory phase for negotiations on a new trade agreement between the EU and Ukraine, which will be led by the European Commission, is currently underway, Szekerski stressed. He added that their course will also depend on the situation on the front."It should be taken into account that, depending on the military situation, the discussion on the degree of openness and liberalization of the European market for Ukrainian goods may have a different nature," the Polish minister concluded. It is worth noting that the validity of the European Union's emergency trade measures, which abolished duties and quotas on Ukrainian exports, expires on June 5. The European Commission plans to sharply reduce imports of Ukrainian agricultural products, and due to the new trade conditions after the end of the "economic visa-free regime", the Ukrainian budget will lose 3.5 billion euros.
