Significant savings. Canadian researchers find way to reduce data center energy consumption

Researchers from the University of Waterloo have developed a cost-effective and simple solution to reduce data center energy consumption by almost 30%. This is achieved by adding just 30 lines of new code to the Linux operating system. Since most web traffic passes through data centers using Linux, optimizing the processing of information "packets" can significantly improve efficiency. Professor Martin Karsten and graduate student Peter Kay first presented this method in December 2023 in the journal "Proceedings of the ACM on Measurement and Analysis of Computing Systems (POMACS)", and the code itself was included in Linux version 6.13 in January 2025.
