In 2025, the existing trends in the export and import of agricultural seeds will be maintained

For 5 years in a row, Ukraine has been increasing the export of agricultural seeds, mainly grain and oilseeds, while reducing the volume of their supply from abroad, said Oleksandr Zakharchuk, Head of the Investment and Logistics Department of the National Scientific Center "Institute of Agrarian Economics", Corresponding Member of the NAAS.According to him, during this time, seed exports have increased more than 6 times - from 20.0 million USD to 122.0 million USD.The decrease in the import of grain and oilseed seeds of foreign selection from abroad is caused by several factors, the scientist explained.Firstly, the opportunity to produce conditioned hybrid seeds of foreign selection within our state at new modern foreign seed factories in Ukraine to meet domestic needs and ensure exports to EU countries.Secondly, the reduction in seed consumption due to the reduction in commercial crop areas caused by the large-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, in particular the temporary occupation of its territories and the conduct of hostilities. In addition, the import into Ukraine of only paternal and maternal lines of hybrids, pre-basic forms of varietal seeds of grain crops with their subsequent propagation in domestic seed fields. At the same time, the increase in the sowing of some grain and oilseed niche crops, caused by the consequences of the invasion of large-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and the temporary occupation of its territory, led to an increase in the import of seed material of such niche crops as rye, oats, sorghum, flax, hemp and mustard, as well as sugar beet and vegetable seeds during 2022-2024.According to the forecast estimates of scientists from the Institute of Agrarian Economics, in 2025 and subsequent years, the existing trends of annual export growth by 10-15% and stabilization of imports of agricultural crop seeds within 350-400 million USD will be maintained, Oleksandr Zakharchuk concluded.
