The European Union will generate more energy from the sun than from coal in 2024 for the first time in its history, according to estimates by the Ember think tank, which studies EU climate policy."Solar energy has become the main driver of fossil fuel use reductions in 2024. It will provide 11.1% of the EU's electricity (304 TWh), surpassing coal (269 TWh) for the first time," the report says. The trend towards increased solar energy production is observed in all EU countries.In 2024, solar and wind energy will provide a record 29% of the EU's electricity demand, while gas will provide 15.7% and coal will provide 9.8%. Nuclear power will account for 23.7% of total electricity production, while hydropower will provide 13.2%.
