Uzhgorod – Chop Eurotrack opened in Ukraine

The opening of the European standard railway track between Chop and Uzhgorod stations took place in Uzhgorod. The event was attended by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and Deputy Prime Minister for the Reconstruction of Ukraine – Minister of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine Oleksiy Kuleba, along with the state leadership, representatives of the European Union, the European Investment Bank and foreign railway companies.The new 22 km section became the first Eurotrack project of this scale in the history of independent Ukraine. The total construction cost was UAH 1.3 billion, half of which was financed by an EU grant under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program, and another 50% by a loan from the European Investment Bank.Electrification will begin on the Chop–Uzhgorod section in the fall of 2025. It will also be implemented with the support of CEF and will be partially financed from the state budget of Ukraine (the 2025 budget already provides for UAH 128 million).Direct passenger trains to Bratislava, Vienna and Budapest will start running from Uzhgorod starting from September 12.
