Cherries are gradually becoming one of the key fruit and berry products for Ukraine. While in Europe the area under this crop is decreasing due to the high cost of cultivation, Ukraine has the potential to occupy a new niche in the European market. This was stated by Yuriy Ovchar, chief agronomist of the horticultural farm of the company "Grinora Fruit" (Vinnytsia region) in his article in the magazine "Gardening in Ukrainian".
"Domestic demand for fresh cherries will remain for some time, as will interest from processors," the specialist notes. "But if we want to work with cherries professionally and in the long term, we need to establish plantations for machine harvesting, and not on 2-3 hectares." Let us recall that the farm "Grinora Fruit" already harvests up to 100 tons of cherries daily, growing mainly the Kelleris and Lutovka varieties.
